Window Cleaning Tips

For A Thorough Cleaning
There is more to cleaning your windows than just wiping windowpanes once in a while. Keeping your windows clean means attacking screen, glass, drapery, blinds and windowsills with equal force.

Here are some helpful window cleaning tips to help you get started:

Screen Cleaning
  • Remove screen and place outside
  • Spray screen with hose to remove debris
  • Using a mixture of dish soap and water wash screens with a brush to get in between small holes
  • Clean aluminum tracks using a scouring pad and soapy water
  • Rinse
  • Dry
  • Re-hang
Glass Cleaning
  • Using either a homemade or store-bought cleaning solution wipe windowpanes using straight strokes each in the same direction (either left to right or up and down)
  • Be sure to wipe window thoroughly so that no streaks are left.
  • Try using old pillow cases to wipe windows, they will leave less leftover debris than towels
Drapery Cleaning

Taking your drapes to the drycleaner is probably the easiest way to get them clean but there are ways to clean them yourself. Try this method.

  • Fold drapes and rinse them in water
  • Next fill a tub up with laundry detergent and warm water and soak the drapes
  • When you remove your drapes from the soapy water squeeze to remove excess water, never wring them
  • Rinse under cold water
  • Rinse again in a tub full of hot water and starch
  • Hang to dry
  • Iron
  • Re-hang on windows

Cleaning Blinds:

  • Before you take down your blinds make sure slats are in the open position so that you can easily clean between them.
  • Line your bathtub with towels to prevent any scratching.
  • Fill a tub with enough water to cover blinds and add some dish soap
  • Allow blinds to soak for a few minutes then wipe the top and bottom of each slat with a damp cloth or sponge.
  • Once you have finished washing, rinse the blinds with water, remove them from the bathtub and dry them on a towel.
Cleaning Window Sills
  • Start by vacuuming dirt out of sills with a vacuum hose
  • Dust out any excess dirt with a paintbrush
  • Pour diluted alcohol onto a cloth and wipe sills clean

Cleaning Windows: Like Pulling Off A Band-Aid
You can clean all of the windows in your home in a day if you attack each task one after the other. Start by removing blinds and drapery and getting that cleaning process under way first so that while these items dry you can address the other parts of your windows.

Get The Whole Family Involved
Window cleaning is a great way to entertain the kids on a Saturday afternoon. Try to get the whole family involved in window cleaning process to speed up the work. If each person is assigned a specific part of the window this chore will be out of the way in no time.
