All Shapes And Sizes

Windows come in a variety of styles, the least troublesome of which is usually a sliding window, and the most vexing a double-hung window that has cords and weights facilitating its movements, elements that can stretch, break and become dirty over time. Of the parts of a window, the most important to this discussion are the sashes (the framed windowpanes), the channels (where the sashes slide up and down) and the stops, which keep the sashes held within the frame. Next time you hear the expression "pulling out the stops," the image of a window crashing to the floor may spring to mind. Or it may not.

Common Problems
The more typical problems that can affect any wood-framed window are swelling due to humidity and careless painting techniques, which literally seal a window shut as tightly as if it were glued.
