Getting Staples Into Hard Wood

Question: I'm reupholstering a chair whose frame is VERY hard wood, and my staple gun can't get the staples into the wood. I tried an electric staple gun, and the staples just bent instead of going in the wood. Hammer and tacks would take forever. What can I do?
