Add Lattice To Top

Question: I have a standard run fence and it uses dog eared boards (no spaces). Now I want to add lattice to top. The current post are not lined up, so every 8 feet I will attach a 2 foot 4 by 4. My question is what would be a good way to attach the 4 by 4 and should the lattice be centered or flush on one side. Should I dado the 4 by 4 to slip in the lattice, or notch it. I think there will be some trim involved. Any suggestions? I am no carpenter Thanks
