Fence Post Spikes, Will They Hold Up??

Question: I am looking at putting a wooden fence (6' x 8' panels) up in the back yard and a picket style fence in the front yard. I was wondering if anyone has tried using the metal spike technique to erect the fence posts instead of concrete or gravel?? I was wondering as to the sturdiness of the posts. They are being burried 30" into the ground, but the wooden post is only held by a 6-8" sleeve at the bottom. I was just wondering if anyone has had experience with this before. Thank you!
