Running Hot Braided Rope Through Wood Poles

Question: We are about to put up a braided rope hot wire fence. We have already installed all of our wooded postes. I am interested in seeing if you can just drill holes in the posts and run the wire through or do you have to run it through the plastic clips on the outside of the post?
