Preparing Hardwood Floor For Re-Varnishing

Question: several planks in my hardwood floor have a 1/4 inch gap between them due to water damage. other wise the planks are level - not warped. the question is do i put wood putty between these gaps for replace the wood planks so that they are flush. - 7 planks 7 ft long.
