Refinishing Hardwood With Many Gouges And Scratches

Question: I just bought my first home and am in the process of pulling up the berber carpet to redo the beautiful hardwood floors underneath. This is the first time I have every undertaken such a project. The people that placed the carpet put a multitude of staples in, some of which are lower than the level of the floor and we have to dig out. I am using an awl and a can opener to to that, it's the smalles things we can find. But I'm still left with TONs of gauges and scratches in my floors. I've redone my son's bedroom already and while it looks SO much better than before, the marks on the floor are very visible. Is there anything I can do to fix the problem areas in the other floors?
