Squeaky Floors With No Sub Floor

Name: Mary  City: Bainbridge Island, WA

Question: This is an old house and has fir on the 2nd flr with no sub floor under the flooring. The fir is actually the ceiling for the first floor supported by 8x8 beams about 18" apart. Therefore a design element also. The floors on the 2nd level squeak and most fixes I have seem so far will be ugly from the 1st floor. Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks
