Question: My townhouse was built in 1978. The main floor and the 2nd floor both squeek when walking on them. The 2nd floor is by far the worst! The 2nd floor is all carpeting, which needs to be replaced. I have pulled up the carpeting and padding in the master bedroom and tried to screw down some of the squeeky sheets of wood. However, this did very little to quiet the creeks. Since the walls were built ontop of the floors, I cannot simply replace the faulty wood. I am contemplating about just throwing down another layer of wood and installing thick carpeting. Will this solve my squeeks and creeks? If so, what thickness of wood is recommended (1/2", 3/4"...).
