Title of Question:

Blower Is Loud

Name: Jay  City: Columbus, OH

Question: Let me preface by saying that I don't know a whole lot about heating and cooling. I have a Rheem Criterion furnace. I noticed that the PVC pipe (which I guess is for venting) coming out of the furnace was cracked near where it comes out of the unit. Water was coming out of the crack and running into the drain in the floor, so I thought that I would just repair the crack in a couple of days and not worry about it. Then yesterday, when the blower would kick on, I would hear a very loud screech. Then I would hear a high-pitched whistle, and then a loud screech again when the blower would shut off. I opened the furnace and found traces of water sitting in the bottom. It wasn't much water, but there definitely was water. I came to the conclusion that water had gotten onto the blower and possibly caused some corrosion. I tried to spray a dab of WD-40 on it (which may not have been a good idea - I don't know). It seemed to clear up. I left home for the night, and when I came back in the morning, I heard a loud humm, but no blower. I figured that I was burning up the blower motor, so I shut off the A/C. I opened the unit again, and was able to move the blower by hand. I turned the A/C back on, and this time the blower started, but was louder than ever. I shut it off again and came in to work. I plan to open it tonight to get a better look at the blower. Can anyone tell me if this is some other problem, or what I should do to try to remedy this problem??

Answer: Call a professional.....If the PVC line is the condensate line for the AC and is cracked, that is one thing....If it is part of the power vent for the funace exhaust, that is another and could be deadly...PVC power vents carry carbon monoxide and other dangerous gases out of your home......The bottom line is you need a professional to disgnose and repair this problem and your life could literally depend upon it.
