Heat Pump Defrost Cycle

Question: My Carrier heat pump is 5 years old. Since its first spring, it has gone into defrost cycle as often as every other cycle when the temperature is above freezing (from upper 30's to low 60's). The cylce is shorter than the defrost cycle when the temperature is around freezing. The company that installed it and has maintained the unit replaced the "defrost panel" last summer (which made no difference) but otherwise hasn't known what to do. My electric bill isn't bad. I worry if this is causing needless wear and tear on my unit.
