Why Cant I Regulate My Electric Heat?

Question: i have an Underwriters laboratories Inc. electric furnace its quite old, mid 70,s i think. when i first turn it on i can turn it off and on with the thermostat, but, after about five minutes the thermostat will not work. the thermostat is working fine but the furnace is not recieving the signal. ive checked the wiring from the thermostat and the furnace and it is fine. So what else could be the problem?
