Answer: First, DO NOT leave the pool empty over the winter. Second, start to drain your pool. You will see the small crack as you drain. When my pool was leaking, it was very noticable- since the water was coming back from the ground into the pool.

Answer: The 2 most common leaks are underground lights and the skimmer (where the skimmer meets the concrete). If you follow my advice you want to make sure the pump doesn't come on automatically (this may take a few days, depending on how fast you leak is). To find out if its your skimmer let the water go down below the skimmer level. There are 2 pipes connecting to the skimmer, one going to the pump and one going to the pool to level it out. Plug the "leveller" hole with either a threaded pipe end cap ($1 from Home Depot, mine was 1.5") or the ruber ball part of a turky baster. I used the end cap for the end connected to the skimmer and the turkey baster thing for the end connected to the pool just to make sure. Then if you skimmer water level goes does you know its a leak in the skimmer, and if the rest of the pool water goes down you know you have a leak somewhere else. With me I was losing almost 2 inches of water a day, so it was not a big deal to let the pool drain down to the leak, which was the light (I actually had a leak at the skimmer and the light). If you have access to the leak you can plug it up with some pool putty (epoxy) that you can get at any pool supply store. With me the skimmer leak is just barely beyond were I can access it, so I guess I'm going to have to call a plumber or leak repair guy or something.
