Taking Out Vinyl Liner

Question: We just bought a house that wasn't maintained well. Found out the liner was bad so we drained the pool. There are holes in the liner and it is coming off of the sides. Will the underneath be damaged if we take out the liner before we are actually ready to put in a new one?
