Colors To Make A Room Look Bigger

Question: Hey everyone, I just purchased my first apartment (in NYC) and have just finished gutting the place. Next step is to choose some wall colors. The apt is fairly small (under 1000 sq ft), so I'm hoping to go with a color scheme that is bright and opens up the space as much as possible. In doing some research online, I found some articles about using earthy flesh-toned hues to lighten up a room (lot's of info on www.livecomfortably.com about this). Any other ideas for how to use color to open up a space?
