Answer: It really depends on the code in your area. I would suggest you speak with the local Building Inspector for your town/city and check with him/her. In addition to the standard size, there will also be a specific height from the floor. Good luck!

Answer: Code requires 5.7 square feet of open area when the window is opened, with a minimum 21" width clearance. For casement windows a 30 x 42 Visions 2000 with egress hardware complies with code. Also an Anderson CW 135 or CW 14. If you want a slider, you need to get to a 4' x 4' (or slightly larger with some manufacturers). For a single hung you need a window almost the size of a door (well not quite, but they are very large. When you install the window you have to make sure that where you can place a level through the window, that the distance to the floor is not over 44".
