Question: if egress window is larger than the already standard basement opening, is there a need for header support under the sill plate?

Answer: Absolultely. If you must widen a rough opening to accomodate an egress window in any wall, it must have an appropriate sized header to span the rough opening distance. This can be done in a variety of ways depending upon from which the existing walls are constructed and range from steel beams, masonry lintels, wooden lam beams, conventional framed wooden headers, and more.
