Windows Won'T Stay Open

Question: I recently purchased a home and several of the double hung windows will not stay open unless we use some kind of prop. Any ideas on how to repair such a problem??

Answer: You will have to increase the weights. The weights should = the weight of the window. remove the window and weigh it. then check the total weight of the hung weights, increase as neccesery equally on each side.

Answer: The weights are too small. remove and increase. Each weight should be half of the window weight.

Answer: Tilt in the sash and completely remove. Usuallty there is a pin on ech side of the sash which goes into the balance. They are probably not in the balance shoe.
