Need To Hang A Heavy Mirror

Question: I want to hang a rather heavy decorative mirror on dry wall. I'm told I need to find the studs & put the molly bolts into them. I don't know how to find the studs & cannot afford to buy the expensive "stud-finder" . Too expensive for me anyway. Can anybody help? Also, are the "hurricane hooks" advertised on TV really any good?
