Title of Question:

Fence posts installation in wet soil

Name: John Hendrickson  City:

Question: I have damp soil along my fence line and my fence leans in the spring until the soil drys out, then I can repair it. I want to replace my fence now and eliminate the problem, any suggestions, Lots of sand around the hole for the posts?

Answer: I find it hard to believe that a fence can lean because of the soil it stands in. Most fences would stand upright in jello. Next time you right the fence, ensure your posts are in the ground at least 1/3rd of the total length ie. 6' high fence = 3' of post in the ground. Concrete of back fill must be firmly consolidated. If need be install outrigers to ensure its stability.

Answer: Use sand as backfill, the water should help compact the sand around the post. If you use concrete it may not flex with your land as well as just plan old sand. When placing the sand water it in the hole, it should dry out and be solid...
