FRENCH DRAIN BASIN

Question: I am looking at putting in a french drain because my backyard is really muddy for days after it rains. The problem is I don't know where to go, every direction is uphill. Could I bury a 50 gallon drum or somthing for the drain to into and then drain out from there? Other ideas?
