Toilet Problem

Question: We had a plastic toilet paper roll holder fly into the toliet and be flushed down. My husband "fixed" it by plunging the toliet and flushing several times. Now we can't use the toilet at all because when flushed the bowl fills to the top with water and then slowly drains out. Nothing actually flushes down. Is there any way I can fix this? I really can't afford a plumber to come in!
