How To Stop Backwashing

Question: I am taking care of my neighbors pool and he showed me how to backwash. I tried but now I cannot get it to stop backwashing. I turned pump off turned handle to backwash. The pump backwashed no problem there. Then I turned pump off turned handle to filter and it won't stop backwashing. Help what am I not doing?
