Weir Door Won'T Stay Open

Question: Lately our weir door won't stay open all the way. We have a gunite pool and run the filter 10 hours a day so its off at night and not sure if the door closed and for some reason did not fall open when it powered up today. This morning the skimmer was only half full and was 'sucking' like it would do if the water level in the pool was too low. I moved the lever on the filter to main drain and then back to skimmer/drain and it was fine but now I am paranoid. I put my hand in there to see if anything was on the weir or broken but it seems fine. Anyone have any ideas? I wonder why its there anyway since it has to be open for things to operate?? I feel like ripping it off because now I am out there checking it all the time to make sure its open. The pool is 18 years old and this have never happened before. Help! Terri
