Remodeling With A Conventional/Stick Built Home

Question: We are wanting to do some remodeling which includes moving walls and removing some existing walls. The contractor we had come out said we would not be able to do this due to our home was "stick built". My question is..is there a way to reinforce the roof to allow us to do this. He said no interior wall could be moved. I do not understand. Any help or suggestions?
