Direct Tv Tivo Hard Drive

Question: I have been having trouble with my tivo system giving me a "powering up please wait" error, then after 30 seconds or so, it reboots and starts over. Service said it is a bad hard disk. I have only had it less then a year and goetting the runaround with direct tv. QUESTION: how can i re format the drive? everything except the OS. And what is the OS?
