Question: I just purchased a home that has cedar siding (tongue and grove) on the sides and the back. The home is approx 20 yrs old. It has holes in it from woodpeckers and carpenter bees. The cedar was painted and is beginning to peel. Overall the cedar is good condition but I am worried about the cost of maintenance. Personal preferences aside, does it make sense to replace the cedar with stucco when considering the home's resale value and cost of maintenance in the long run? Estimates to paint and repair cedar average $6k. Estimates to replace with stucco are around $14K.
