Replace J Channel For Aluminum Siding

Question: Someone who owned the house before me nailed through the bottom side of the j channel all around the house with big fat nails. Also I need to wrap the board that just below that that interfaces between the aluminum siding and the brick with aluminum. So I was planning to cut ~1/2 of the lowest section of aluminum siding out and then replace over it later with a modified piece of siding with the top nailer cut off after wrapping the board in aluminum and installing a new start slight up from the board. Any suggestions for best steps or things to watch out for. I have never done this before. Thanks!
