Question: i am having my house redecorated. And would like to know a good rule of thumb for estimating painting costs so that i can better compare contractors.

Answer: There is no rule of thumb....The price will be based on the total amount of gallons that will be used, the amount of coats, the price of the type paint you choose, the heights of ceilings and walls, whether or not mouldings will also be painted or stained, whether the house is vacant or furninshed, who moves the furniture, whether the rooms can be sprayed or rolled, any unusual textures of paint you may require, whether you have existing surfaces that need to be coated, how soiled the existing surfaces are and if they require any special surfaces primers or treatments, if you are transition from a very light to dark or dark to light color, etc...and so forth...
