Brick Verneer

Question: The front of my home has brick verneer from ground level up to approx. 4 ft. I see a wide open space between the back of the brick work and my house sheathing when I stand at the front corners of my house. I think that the mortor has fallin out there or it never had any to begin with. Should I find some way to seal these areas up? Calking, mortor etc.
