Crack At Ceiling And Wall Joint

Question: i live in a cold climate and in the winter the ceiling seems to lift from the wall down nearly the whole length of the center of the house. this leaves a crack that comes back together in the warm weather. are the truss supposed to be attached to supporting walls?
