Filling In A Recessed Area In The Wall

Question: I have a recessed area in my living room wall that had shelves that I have taken out. I was going to fill it in with sheet rock ancored on some pieces of wood nailed to the interior of the recessed area. The wall is plaster however and the nails pulled out. Is there some foam material that I could put in instead and then put the "mud" over it? That seems like it would be easier than the sheetrock.
