Sanding Down Mud And Exposing Tape

Question: spread too much mud over tape for drywall. sanded it down so it would feel smooth touch and even with the existing wall, but when it finally seems smooth, I find that the tape is exposed. can I sand the tape down? or am I applying way too much mud?

Answer: just spread another coat of topping over the tape enough to cover it and lightly sand it when dry
