Electric ovens are the more common type of ranges in peoples homes. So get familiar with yours.

On Top
Most electric ranges have exposed heating elements (coils) that cook food (and burn fingers). More sophisticated ranges may have recessed stovetop burners that are wonderfully easy to clean but require professional repair when they inevitably wear out.

It Doesn't Work
The first thing to check whenever a burner or the oven fails to heat up is your breaker box to make sure you haven't blown a fuse or tripped a breaker. Sometimes the mere act of heating up the stove is enough to overload the circuit. Fortunately, it is also the easiest remedy for a failing stove.

Other problems with electric ranges will usually involve you calling in a trained professional. Unless you have fairly considerable skill with electricity (and let's face it, you wouldn't need this guide if you did), these repairs are for experts in your brand. For guidance getting the right professional, contact your range's manufacturer or your local dealer.
