Everyone likes to save money on remodeling, but without losing the personal touch and extra embellishments. Here are 5 easy ways to save on remodeling without really noticing the difference.

  1. Stick with the home improvement plan. Sounds easy, doesn’t it? You make a kitchen remodeling plan and should stay within the kitchen walls. But, what if the contractor suggests opening up the dining room wall to add more light? First, price it out. Can you afford it? Also remember, you probably can’t add extra lighting or a stone floor without adjusting the remodeling budget.

  2. Go for a quick fix. Kitchen remodeling can be an expensive endeavor, so think about how to get the same look without hiring a contractor for an eight week stint. According to Consumer Reports, it’s easy to repaint the kitchen cabinets. Try these step-by-step instructions on cabinet painting by Old House Web. Another option is to do a cabinet refacing, where a contractor refaces the doors and drawer fronts. You can save the cost of buying new kitchen cabinets and, in most cases, cabinet refacing can dramatically change the design of your kitchen.
  3. Skimp on home improvement materials. Instead of the bluestone patio, try a brick one. Instead of Italian marble shower tile, try ceramic in an upscale pattern.
  4. Do some remodeling yourself. Notice I said “some” remodeling. Most home owners are not prepared to do major remodeling. You can, however, tear out kitchen cabinets, remove an old tile floor, or repaint the walls when the contactor is done. Just make sure you know how to install the faucet or build a new deck. In the end, you can save lots of money and help prepare your home for the future.
  5. Get creative with remodeling. Use unique colors and materials to make a difference. Try salvage yards, demolition sales, or other outlets for cost saving materials. Check out these kitchen cabinet remodeling ideas from Starcraft Custom Builders.

Before you financial dive in over your head, try some, or all, of these tips to get the bang without the major bucks.

Allison, you offered some great low-budget ideas for remodeling. Another tip your readers can benefit from is tax credits. The Obama administration is encouraging us to make our homes more energy-efficient, so tax credits are being offered on a variety of remodeling tools. There is a 30% tax deduction for those updating windows, doors, insulation, biomass stoves, roofs, HVAC, and non-solar water heaters. This deduction expires at the end of 2010. Homeowners may also deduct 30% of the cost by installing geothermal heat pumps, small wind turbines, or solar energy systems, by the end of 2016. There is also a 30% deduction, up to $500, on a variety of fuel cells as well. Also, try checking out Energy Star products, which will save you money in the long run.
