A little landscaping can go a long way toward boosting your home value. Most people realize the power of curb appeal, but they sometimes forget how the finishing touches can also make a big splash. Here are a few landscaping projects that can add to your overall curb appeal and, ultimately, your home value:

  • A fountain or waterfall. There’s nothing like the trickling sound of water to catch your attention. Add a wall mounted fountain near a patio or a cascading waterfall next to a deck and visitors will remember it. A special water feature can be the finishing touch that says, “Buy me!”

With any landscaping plan, make sure you scope it out as part of the overall yard, says HGTV. Otherwise, your home value could suffer.

  • A fragrant garden. A few rose bushes or groups of oriental lilies can add lots of value for your senses. Look for a spot right outside the door, along a patio, or by the driveway, where visitors will be hit with the fragrance. Here are some great tips on how to boost your landscaping design with fragrance.
  • A burst of color. Bright pink coneflowers, vibrant orange lilies, or bright yellow coreopsis can catch a visitor’s eyes as they drive up. Check out a few landscaping design books for ways to combine colors for the best impace.

And, last, but not least…

  • Weed control. This isn’t as much fun as a trickling stream, but a weed problem can doom your landscaping plan. Try to be diligent about getting weeds under control. Here are some good ways to incorporate weed control into your landscaping plan. One suggestion is to add landscaping fabric, which is a layer of mesh-like fabric that smothers the weeds. The beauty of this is that it stays in place and you can always cut out holes to plant flowers.

Any, or all, of these sugestions can push your home value as well as your home enjoyment, to the next level.

Allison, these are great tips for landscaping and curb appeal. Here are some other tips your readers could consider when updating their curb appeal. Porches add character to rather drab houses, so if your property or budget allows, think about adding one to your home. If your siding is dull or deteriorating, replacing it with something new will refresh the look and add value to your home. Small details like railing and columns can add visual interest and unify the look of your home. Remember, the front door is one of the first things people notice about a house, so it is important to make sure that yours is attractive and fits with the other details of the house. Some quick fixes like plant fixtures and replacing hardware around the house contribute as well.
