Wondering how to save money on common household projects? Here’s an easy one. Stop washing dishes by hand and use the dishwasher.

According to a national survey by Impulse Research on behalf of Bosch home appliances, half of Americans think they will save money by washing dishes by hand. Not true! The reality is that using a dishwasher can save up to 85 percent more water when compared with hand washing. Now that’s a great endorsement for using home appliances!

Hand washing dishes requires 43 gallons of water, compared to many dishwashers that use as little as two gallons. Go figure!

Here are other ways to save big on home appliances and remodeling:

  1. Unplug home appliances when not in use. The typical household spends nearly $2,000 a year on energy costs. About 5 to 10 percent of that figure is wasted by home appliances that are plugged in 24 hours a day. The big hitters are computers and TVs, as they take up power even in standby mode. According to Dailyfinance.com, it all adds up!
  2. Opt for energy-efficient appliances. Energy Star recommends buying a washer that fits your typical wash load–as opposed to an extra large one that will waste energy. Also, look for a dryer with a moisture sensor so you avoid overdrying.
  3. Don’t overlook the obvious–seal all air leaks! Many home owners live with leaking windows and doors and don’t realize how much energy they are losing. Here are remodeling tips to help you deal with drafty doors and windows.

And, don’t forget those energy efficient rebates, like these listed by the National Association of Home Builders. If you’re considering building with a geothermal design or adding solar panels or some other form of energy-efficient design, check out what is available to help offset the cost.
