As a new homeowner, you’ll find yourself spending a lot of time at the local hardware store. Some of that time will be spent in the power tools section, wondering what all those multicolored, oddly-shaped items are used for. Well, wonder no more. Here are five power tools that you are likely to find yourself needing frequently–and you may soon wonder how you ever got along without them.

1. The Cordless Power Drill

This is arguably the most useful power tool ever devised. Far from the old electric motor with a cord, handle, and chuck, today’s power drill is a marvel of technology. Modern batteries give it awesome power and endurance. Not only can you drill holes with it (and as a new homeowner you’ll be drilling lots of holes), but it will also accept attachments such as screwdriver bits and wire brushes. Cordless power drills range from under $30 to over $250.

2. The Circular Saw

Another very useful tool. You may find yourself constructing a deck, a fence, a patio cover, or a shed. Lumber must be cut into the proper length for all these projects, and a circular saw is the ideal tool for the job. You can choose from either a cordless or 110 volt corded saw. Either is indispensable for large projects. Circular saws sell for under $40 to more than $200.

3. The Jigsaw

This versatile tool goes where the circular saw can’t. It is ideal for cutting holes in wallboard or for fine saw work in confined areas. A jigsaw can cost as little as $30 and as much as $150

4. The Sander

Absolutely necessary for smoothing surfaces before painting, sanders range from small orbital units that start at around $30 to large belt sanders costing $200 and up. The size of the sander needed depends on the size of the job.

5. The Air Compressor

This is a tool that operates other tools, from paint sprayers to sand blasters to impact wrenches and more. A small household compressor can be found for under $100, with larger units costing $500 and more.

The trend today is toward cordless power tools. Voltage ranges for these tools vary from 7.2 volts to 18 volts. The voltage rating determines the relative power of the tool. There is also a wide variety of manufacturers to choose from, including Black & Decker, Craftsman, DeWalt, Hitachi, Kobalt, Makita, Skil, Stanley, and more. Cordless power tools are also available in combo kits, with one battery interchangeable between two or more tools.

I have one more tool to add!!

Its hard to believe however builders now seem to regard the site radios as essential. They use them to charge all their tools, phones and mp3 players while on the job.
