Out shopping with a friend last week, we heard it. The unmistakable notes of “White Christmas” serenading us as we strolled down the street, window shopping and enjoying the 85-degree Arizona weather. Believe me, the irony was not lost on us.

I’m not sure why the sudden and overwhelming hoopla of the holidays always takes me by surprise. Although we typically grumble that the stores put out Christmas-related items earlier each year, right around the first of November seems to be the point where you can’t escape the fa-la-la even if you wish to.

Since I can’t escape anyway, I’m trying to take advantage of the fact and get my gift buying done early this year. If you’re one of those people like my amazing parents who start shopping for next year the day after Christmas, I salute you. If, however, you’re like me and feel proud that you’re working on a list before the middle of December, you’re in good company.

Getting started now will almost surely save you lots of money and stress. As a home improvement guru yourself, you almost certainly have a home improvement guru (or two or three!) on your holiday gift list. Here are a few thoughts to get you started:

- In many cases a good rule of thumb is to buy other DIY friends things that you’d like to have yourself.

- If you remember certain tools your home repair friends need or home repair books they’ve wanted to read for inspiration, now is a great time to help them move a step closer to their dreams.

- If the home improvement guru on your list is your spouse, I highly recommend buying him (or her) something that will provide encouragement to finish that project you’ve been bugging him about for months. But I’m sneaky that way.

Next time I’ll touch on a few hot home improvement products for every do-it-yourselfer on the list!
