The holidays are almost here and there’s nothing like guests on the horizon to force you to take a critical look at your space. Can the rugs be steam cleaned? Should you buy a slipcover? Is the dripping faucet going to drive them crazy. The list goes on.

Home Improvement for Turkey Day

Here’s a look at some realistic home improvement projects you can do between now and Thanksgiving. (I’d start soon, though, just to give yourself a little buffer! This is especially true if you need to hire a contractor.)

  • Painting. My absolute favorite project of all time. O.K., I don’t like the wall repair and cleanup, but when that paint can is opened and you see that fresh color, you know you’re almost there. Look for a room that doesn’t need a lot of repair or two coats of primer. Painting is a good DIY project or get a few estimates from painting contractor.
  • Slipcovers, pillows, accessories. Another easy one. We just covered our cat hair infested couch with a new slipcover and the whole room takes on a new look. Toss in throw pillows, candles, and perhaps a new lamp shade for fun.
  • Quick home repair projects. Fix or replace any dripping faucets, worn out light bulbs, and broken window glass. Caulk around windows to seal any air leaks.
  • Outdoor home improvements. Sweep your steps, clean your front door and your windows. Make sure your walkways are well lit.

The Home Repair Frenzy

All of these home repair projects are easy to do. Most are inexpensive home repair and decorating projects and don’t require the use of a contractor. Once you take on a few, you may be amazed how refreshing your space looks. This is one way to boost your home investment on a dime. Then you can relax and enjoy the holidays.
