Want to save money on remodeling? Get it right the first time.

If you’ve ever had to reorder bathroom tile or call the countertop installer back because of a faulty installation, you know the aggravation. But, have you ever considered the added remodeling costs for mistakes, mix ups and bad planning? Here’s five ways redoing a remodeling project can hit the wallet:

  1. Extra contractor fees
  2. Extra material fees
  3. Material restocking fees
  4. Rush charges to speed up delivery of new remodeling materials
  5. Extra days off work to supervise the work

Sometimes it’s your fault (…you changed your mind on the tile pattern). Sometimes the contractor didn’t measure correctly. Sometimes it’s just human error–or you forgot to factor in permits and other typical remodeling costs.

According to ABC News, here are four common remodeling mistakes that can cost you money:

  1. Not ordering enough cabinet storage space. You need about 4 to 6 linear feet near the sink and dishwasher for glasses and dishes. Ditto for pots and pans near the cooking center. The cost? Several hundred to redesign the kitchen, buy new cabinets or add free standing storage. And, don’t overlook cabinet organization; it can help you save money and work more efficiently in the kitchen. Try these tips from The Container Store.
  2. Choosing a countertop without factoring in stains. Butcher blocks are a big stain catcher–plus they are hard to keep clean. Replacing a stained butcher block countertop with quartz or granite could cost you an additional $2,000 to $4,000.
  3. Picking the wrong size range hood. To solve this one, you might need to spend $750 to $1,200 to rip out the old hood and create more space for a larger one.
  4. Changing your mind after the work begins. A BIG No No that could cost you $1,500 in added material and labor fees.

Doing it right the first time really can save you a bundle of remodeling cash.
