If you’re like me and live in an old house, you know about the love-hate relationship with windows. I love our wood windows, but hate the draft that comes with some of them. In fairness, some work just fine, but the ones that don’t…really don’t.

Replacement Windows: Just the Facts

Should we go through another winter with a cold kitchen or spring for replacement windows? Well, our remodeling contractor made the choice easy. All he had to do was give us an estimate. But, seriously, we’re still debating whether this remodeling project is a go.

Replacement Windows: Now or Later?

Buying replacement windows is not like buying a new faucet or replacing your bathroom vanity. Each of those are fairly easy home improvement decisions that don’t involve talk of “financing”…”long term investment”… “reducing long term energy costs” you get the picture.

Replacement windows are a long term investment, just like buying a car or doing a major remodeling project. They are worth it in the long run, but you do have to pay upfront. So, how do you decide? Now or later?

Replacement Window Tax Credit

One major advantage to buying replacement windows now is the government’s tax credit, designed to prompt those on the fence to take the plunge. Why not when you can get up to $1,200 back at tax time. (Just make sure you get the right paperwork to submit from the window company.)

You may also see short term savings in your energy bills. There’s no doubt that replacing a leaking window with a secure, energy efficient one can save big. (Here are some other ways to reduce energy costs.)

In the end, it probably comes down to comfort. Yes, we all know replacement windows have thicker glass and help the environment…somehow…but when I can get a warmer kitchen without air drafts…that’s when I vote for new windows.

If you decide to fix your roof, the first thing you have to do is to check which parts of the roof are the ones that need repairing and which parts need replacing and buy the necessary materials for fixing your roof. Once that is done, you must clean your roof. Take out the parts that have already been destroyed, or have already deteriorated due to the change in the weather.
