Kitchen remodeling is a process that requires some careful navigation. Have you found the right contractor? Are you sure about the style of kitchen cabinets? Each major decision can lead to excitement…or frustration, depending on how you handle it.

Before taking the plunge, think about these common kitchen remodeling mistakes–and try real hard to avoid them!

Common Kitchen Remodeling Mistakes

  • Trying to be the contractor…when you’re not! Many contractors will tell you that it’s easier to work when the home owner is NOT home. While it’s fine to be involved in decisions and peek in on the work now and then, don’t try to be the boss. If you’ve hired a good contractor, let him or her do the job.
  • Moving too quickly. Don’t jump at the first contractor or the first slab of granite you see. Take your time with all the financial and planning aspects of kitchen remodeling. Realize that you have to live with the effects of the kitchen remodeling (good or bad) for years to come.
  • Overspending. It’s easy to get midway through and get into that “while you’re here” mindset. Pretty soon you’ve got the contractor remodeling the bathroom and the laundry room. Was all that in the budget? Probably not. Can you do it later–after you’ve paid all the bills for the new kitchen? Of course you can! And, if you let the dust settle first, you’ll probably have a better perspective on what you really want.
  • Forgetting to bargain. Many things are negotiable in home improvement, says MoneyTalksNews.com. From the granite countertops to the bathroom tile, shop around with suppliers. It also helps to use salvaged products and buy your own supplies if you find a good deal. It all adds up in the end!

I would add…don’t get caught up in the “dream kitchen” fantasy, as it can really suck the money out of your pocket. Keep it reasonable, and keep the cost down.

Thanks for those great considerations Allison. Another kitchen remodeling mistake to avoid is choosing the wrong material. For example, marble counter tops were all the rage a few years ago, but if you do a lot of cooking, it might not be the right choice for you. Hardwood floors are beautiful but can scratch and stain, requiring periodic refinishing. Look at the pros and cons of any material before you buy it.
