Stress. It’s hard to avoid it when owning a house and remodeling. Will the roof leak? Is the furnace on its last legs? Will the new paint color clash with the rug?

Even those who aren’t worried about foreclosure have to deal with housing related stress. (Not as bad as dealing with foreclosures, of course, but you get the picture.) Remodeling a house, particularly kitchen remodeling, is a worthwhile adventure, but it creates change, which leads to stress. We’re changing the place we call home and in many cases it’s a stranger (the big bad contractor) who is doing it.

Dealing With Remodeling Stress

Now that we know the problem, how do we deal with it? One approach is to plan, plan, plan and attack the remodeling stress head on. Knowing what to expect helps us avoid screaming at the contractor, the kids, or the dog. Here are a few tips:

  • Treat it like a business–create a plan, establish a committee, decide who does what, track the spending. I know…it takes the fun out of drooling over wall tile, but it lowers the stress level.
  • Be realisticKitchen remodeling tears up your house for at last six week…usually more. Plan for it during the summer when you can cook out. Know your area restaurants!
  • Give yourself a break–plan daily walks, trips to the coffee shop…anything to get away from the remodeling and the thoughts of the contractor tearing apart your walls.
  • Always keep the end goal in mind–the remodeling will end, one day. It might be two weeks late, but it will end. The contractor will walk out and leave you to your sparkling new kitchen.

Here’s to stress-free remodeling, we hope!

There is no such thing as stress free remodeling unfortunately.

We often practice this very simple phrase “…don’t sweat the small stuff until you need to”..nice article!
