Owning a house and remodeling projects go hand and hand. Even if you enjoy do-it-yourself projects around the house, there may come a time when you need to hire a contractor to help you with a remodeling job. Here are some tips for finding a reliable contractor.

Weed Out Contractors

Interview at least three contractors so that you can compare their prices, services, and reputation. While you may be tempted to choose the contractor with the lowest bid, don’t let price be your only consideration for choosing help. In general, it’s best to ignore a bid that is extremely low compared to the others.

Reputation Counts

You want to know that you’re hiring a contractor with a track record for providing consistent, quality service. Ask the contractors how long they’ve been in business and for referrals from previous customers. Check with your local building department or state attorney general’s office to find out if a contractor has done work in your area and if there have been any complaints. Contact your state’s licensing board to find out if a contractor has a current license. Don’t assume that because a contractor hands you a piece of paper with a license number that it is an active license or that they haven’t had any complaints.

Get All the Details in Writing

You can never ask too many questions when looking for a professional to remodel your home. Your contract should spell out exactly what you’re paying for. It’s important to know how many people will be on the work crew and whether or not they carry workers compensation and liability insurance. Verify coverage with the insurer. Find out if the contractor has done similar jobs and how they will approach your remodel. The contract should also detail when the job will start and end, as well as a payment schedule.

Undertaking a remodeling project can be exciting and stressful. However, finding a reliable contractor who you feel comfortable having in your home will go a long way toward making your remodeling project a success.

Good tips. I also use http://www.econtractorbids.com and have good luck. I get a good amount of bids on the project I post, and can choose the contractor I’m most comfortable with.
