Battling the ugly kitchen cabinet blues? It’s a tough challenge, as the kitchen is a prime entertainment spot and nothing dampens the party more than old, worn cabinets from the 70s.

Smart cabinet refacing

One inexpensive solution is cabinet refacing, which adds a facelift without the expense of demolition and new cabinets. Not all cabinet refacing companies are created equally, however. Here’s how to make sure you get the best deal.

  1. Pick the right materials. Consider veneer, a highly durable and easy to clean material that also is the most economical. In general cabinet refacing costs range from $1,000 to $9,000, depending on the material, size of the kitchen and more.
  2. Try DIY for part of the project. Those upscale maple, cherry and oak cabinets also come in unfinished wood. With a little staining, you can create stunning kitchen cabinets for around $21 per square foot.
  3. Go timeless. Avoid trendy dark chocolate or black edge treatments on the cabinets unless you’re willing to live with it for many years. Colors, stains and textures that are too far from the mainstream are costly and can limit resale options. You’re better off with timeless maple cabinets with an arched panel or crisp white cabinets with flat doors.
  4. Shop around. Talk with at least three cabinet refacing companies and go see their work in other people’s homes. When hiring any kitchen cabinet remodeler, ask questions about their years in business, licensing, and training.
  5. Ask about savings from combining additional services. Many cabinet refacing companies also install sinks, faucets and countertops. If you buy a bigger package, is there a savings per item? Just make sure the brand and types of materials are what you want — and spelled out in the contract.

Kitchen cabinet refacing is a great option for sprucing up your home. Shop around for low cabinet refacing costs, ask lots of questions and don’t be afraid to bargain a little to get a good deal.
