What will it cost? That’s a common question in home improvement land these days. Everyone wants to improve their homes without spending a lot of money. Is that realistic? How much do typical kitchen remodeling or other household projects cost? This should give you an idea:

  • Kitchen remodeling. According to Better Homes & Gardens, this can be a pricey project, but the right home improvement design makes it all worthwhile. Try to keep room configuration to a minimum, as this adds to the plumbing and electrical costs.
  • Bathroom remodeling. This project can range from $7,000 to $12,000 for a modest makeover that does not include moving plumbing lines around and reconfiguring the location of major remodeling elements. Stick to in-stock tile because it’s cheaper to buy and design around.
  • Painting. This can cost between $300 and $700 per room, depending on the amount of work and the degree of repairs needed. Want to paint the kitchen floor? That’s another remodeling option. This works well for older floors that have already been refinished a few times!
  • Add new cabinet hardware. This is an easy and inexpensive project. Try artsy porcelain floral knobs or sleek stainless steel.
  • Build an addition. This is much more ambitious, but often needed to create space for a large kitchen or bathroom. Here are good home improvement ideas.

Home improvement always comes down to the cost. Is it reasonable? Do you love the design? Sometimes it’s best to forget about the overall cost and figure out whether the project will get you the space, design or style you need.
