Replacing Incandescent Lighting
When a fixture flickers or simply doesn't light, the most common problems should be investigated before you decide to replace the fixture. With all overhead lighting replacement projects, first go through your checklist to eliminate possible problems unrelated to the fixture. If you're replacing a working fixture only to upgrade to a newer style, obviously you can skip the list.
Tip: If you will be standing on a ladder, it is highly recommended that you use one made of wood or fiberglass.
With all lighting projects where the light has been determined to be defective, it is important to go through the Overhead Lighting Checklist to find out where the weak link lies. If the project is strictly cosmetic, then the checklist won't apply EXCEPT with regard to shutting off the power and testing to make sure it is off.
