Working on your heating system is, frankly, better left to professionals in most cases. Newbies to home repair may find the task confusing at best (and dangerous at worst). But understanding your system will help you to figure out probable causes of malfunctions before you call in a serviceperson, which can help save you time, money and headache as you proceed. A little knowledge will also help you to recognize when a pro wants to do repairs that seem warranted.

Most heating systems fit into one of three categories:

  1. Forced Air (Furnace)
  2. Water or Steam Heat (Radiator)
  3. Radiant Heat (which involves electrical coils in the floor and ceiling)

Heating Systems Note: Problems will require attention by a professional skilled with radiant heat systems and are not covered by this section.

Each type has advantages and disadvantages, and all present unique issues that typically lead to the same end result: inefficient heat distribution and higher heating bills. In this section, we'll discuss some ways to maintain your forced air heating system or radiator so that it will help keep your tootsies warm for any many seasons as possible.
